Thanks to all the members that came out today to help test hose today and those that stayed a little late after a small brush fire on Haverhill Road to help clean up. 1800 feet of large diameter hose (4 inches inside diameter) and another 1000 feet of attack hose. These hoses are pumped up to extremely high pressures and evaluated with criteria from the National Fire Protection Association in order to stay in service. Hoses that fail to meet criteria from NFPA 1962 are taken out of service and destroyed as they pose a danger to firefighters on emergency scenes. In the midst of hose testing the Essex County Regional Emergency Communications Center received several calls reporting a rapidly extending brush fire on Haverhill Road. Engine 3 and Squad 1 responded and found a permitted burn where the fire had gotten slightly beyond the reach of the homeowner’s hose that he had(accidents happen). Crews assisted him in wetting down some smoldering areas and returned shortly thereafter.
